The next morning, Tilly woke exhausted and no less worried. She packed her car in a confused rush, and then as she got off the phone to Paul, who thankfully was gracious about letting her have a few days off, Jason pulled up in his ute.
Despite the fact her mind was racing as she made a mental list of things to do before she headed down to Jess, she could still appreciate the wide-shouldered figure dressed in a white T-shirt and caramel cargo work pants as Jason gathered the equipment from the back of his vehicle.
âMorning,â he called as she walked out to greet him.
âMorning,â she said, remembering to concentrate on what she had to do.
âEverything okay?â
âIâm not sure, actually. I have to go to Sydney. I had a phone call about my sister.â She waved a hand quickly, realising he probably wasnât interested in all the details. âAnyway, I have to head down there, so I just wanted to check that you didnât need me for anything before I go?â
âYouâre going now?â
She nodded. âAs soon as I get back from next door to ask about feeding the horses.â Feeding was a bit of an issue. They didnât require a strict routine as suchâher brumbies were hardy, but it had been a particularly dry start to autumn, and winter wasnât looking all that promising either, so she still needed to supplement their grazing with hay.
âI can do that,â he said.
âOh no, you donât have to.â She shook her head, caught off guard by his offer. âYouâre busy with all this,â she added, waving a hand vaguely at the building site.
âIâm already here every day. Itâs not like Iâm making a special trip. Show me what needs doing,â he said before she could object further. He put down his toolbox. âThat is, if you trust me with the horses,â he added when she hesitated.
âOf course I trust you,â she said, and felt something warm unfold inside her chest.
âWell, then? Show me what you want done,â Jason said, stepping aside to let her lead him to the tack shed.
She led him inside, fighting a strange feeling. It was hard for her to hand over responsibility for her precious animals. Tilly pointed out the hay stacked neatly in the corner. âItâs easier to wheel them down in the wheelbarrow,â she told him, heading back out of the shed. âJust break it up and toss it over the fence in each paddock, here and over there,â she said, pointing to the far pasture where Red was grazing.
âI can handle that.â Jason nodded confidently.
âThat would be great if you could. One less worry,â she said with a small smile as she turned to walk out of the shed.
âHey,â he said softly, his hand grasping her arm lightly, stopping her. âAre you okay?â
His question caught her by surprise.
âIâm fine,â she managed to get out, but she was overcome by a flood of weariness. She hadnât been able to sleep the night before and her mind had
